When a book has been lauded and awarded in the phenomenal way that it was in France (and by certain people on this side of the channel), it is not unusual for those who genuinely dislike the work in hand to say so in an extremely, er, clear way.

I don't find this review snarky in the least; it is too clever, too engaged, too well done and too filled with integrity to be labelled 'snark'.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1436955242536510167.post-68429151401996910122009-08-11T10:45:49.368+01:002009-08-11T10:45:49.368+01:00This almost feels like snark 'cos there's ...This almost feels like snark 'cos there's a sense of in-joke-iness about short men with tall women, and even a whiff of 'we know what them Frenchies are like'... but ultimately I think not snarky but quite funny.Jamesnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1436955242536510167.post-61082975913723869692009-08-04T17:06:13.346+01:002009-08-04T17:06:13.346+01:00Not snark at all - the snarker, it seems to me, do...Not snark at all - the snarker, it seems to me, doesn't actually care that much about whatever (s)he is being snarky about; it's more about a snidey, knowing, 'look at me' nod. But de Botton just cares too much here and, as the comment above says, has flipped into madness.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1436955242536510167.post-66070850959058881222009-07-23T11:23:19.024+01:002009-07-23T11:23:19.024+01:00Absolutely classic. What de Botton has done transcends Snark and moves into the realm of sheer madness, albeit amusing and hilarious madness. Having written a book about stoicism you would think de Botton could take a few knocks. Obviously not. Still marvelous fun, lets hope he keeps it up.Michael Bhaskarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12052927691670653658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1436955242536510167.post-69765319364871093762009-07-15T12:03:26.548+01:002009-07-15T12:03:26.548+01:00I don't think that this is snark, but neither ...I don't think that this is snark, but neither is it funny. If Moyles were celebrating a sense of the ridiculous, and the glories of being silly (which Alan Carr is great at), then it would be funny, but he just seems to be laughing at Carr who isn't, as he points out, a performing monkey. .Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1436955242536510167.post-52049974273522344062009-07-15T11:58:34.913+01:002009-07-15T11:58:34.913+01:00This wasn't registering on my Snarkometer unti...This wasn't registering on my Snarkometer until Clarkson introduced the words 'ghastly people', and then the hammer shot to the top and dinged the bell with great clamour and force.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1436955242536510167.post-33999195730122883892009-07-15T11:33:04.292+01:002009-07-15T11:33:04.292+01:00I think this is snarky!I think this is snarky!ricoeurianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06313306273776894640noreply@blogger.com
